Porsche made a bold decision by electrifying its most popular SUV. This is why Porsche is pushing forward its future product strategy. Macan was originally a compact SUV, but is now looking to cross over into other segments such as the sports electric luxury segment. The Macan, in its new form must be both a capable electric SUV and drive like a Porsche. It looks radical and has a more sleek shape with Taycan inspired detailing.
It has a futuristic look and a sportier edge. The DRLs have four-point units and optional Matrix leds. There are also frameless door frames and larger wheels, now 22 inches. There are some Porsche-specific styling features, such as an adaptive rear spoiler and active cooling flaps for the front air intakes.
The new Premium Platform Electric’s (PPE) benefits include a longer wheelbase and more space. The interior is roomier with more comfort and now, the luggage space is 540 liters while a ‘frunk’, adds in a second luggage capacity of 84 liters. The design of the Macan is typical Porsche. It has a minimalistic look, but it does not sacrifice all physical controls in favor of touchscreens. For example, the air vents are physical and so are the controls for the air conditioning. Like all Porsches of the last few years, the Macan also has three screens. A 12.6-inch curved instrument cluster that stands alone and a central 10.9-inch display. Macan has for the first-time a passenger touchscreen measuring 10.9 inches.
Macan Turbo delivers up to 1,130Nm of torque and 639PS with the new Macan. This is a massive power increase, and it means that the 0-100 km/h speed will be 3.3 seconds. Porsche Macan 4 can reach 100 km/h after 5.2 second. A 100 kWh lithium-ion batteries is located under the car. Its new 800 volt architecture allows for faster charging. The DC charging output can reach 270 kW. A fast-charging unit can charge a battery from 10% to 80% in just 21 minutes. A high-voltage switch within the battery allows for bank charging at 400-volt stations by splitting the 800-volt battery into two batteries with 400-volt rated voltages.
Porsche has made a concerted effort to maintain the brand’s ethos. The Macan Turbo costs $105,300, but it also offers more technology and performance. The car’s ability to deliver the same driving excitement as the gasoline Macan remains a mystery, but its attractiveness for enthusiasts is that it is an EV.
