All eyes have been on Team Mongolia since they unveiled their Olympic uniform earlier this month.
While Olympic uniforms are typically created with comfort and function in mind—think lightweight track suits with a water-repelling feature, sweatpants and sneakers—Michel&Amazonka, the Mongolia-based designers behind Team Mongolia’s uniforms, wove cultural references throughout their opening and closing attires.
New launches inspired by the upcoming Paris Olympics
Loose-fitting vests were fitted with high collars and paired with Mongol “gutals”, boots with upturned toes typically worn for horseback riding or wrestling. Red, white and navy blue are the colours of the Mongolian national flag. The clothing, beaded accessories, and drawstring bag all featured these colors. Homages to the Olympic torch, rings and the Soyombo symbol—the national symbol of Mongolia—can be found in the gold-coloured embroidery.
Michel&Amazonka also reimagined the traditional Mongol Deel, a long, caftan-like garment worn with a sash and belt, in white with gold embroidery, punctuated by a blue collar.
But this is not the brand’s first rodeo: Michel&Amazonka also designed the Olympic uniform Team Mongolia wore at the 2022 Winter Olympics and the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.
