    Homemade Herbal Lip Balm

To continue the theme of DIY natural lip care recipes, I’m sharing this recipe for homemade herbal lip balm. Sometimes I want to use something other than my tinted lipbalm or homemade lipstick for dry lips. After gardening or being outside in the wind/snow my lips can start to get chapped, but I don’t want color or shine.

This recipe is also great for guys and kids since it isn’t brightly colored or strongly scented. This natural lip balm contains an optional nourishing herb infusion which helps to protect and heal lips. If you prefer, you can leave out these ingredients to make a version without scent that is still hydrating. Plus it’s easy to add a little more healing and scent with essential oils if desired.

This herbal lip balm is also great because it lasts for a long time. A little bit goes a very long way. This organic lip balm also makes great stocking fillers or small gifts.

    Lip Balm with Herbs

Natural anti-fungal, antibacterial and moisturizing properties are found in the herbal ingredients. It has been used by some people to accelerate the healing of colds sores. It also doesn’t have petroleum or synthetic ingredients like most commercial lip products so you can feel safe using it on yourself or your kids.

Here I’ve used a blend of echinacea, comfrey, plantain leaf, calendula, and a few others. Add chamomile or lemon balm to your blend. Lemon balm specifically helps with cold sores so it’s a nice addition if they’re an issue for you.

    Other Nourishing Ingredients

As a base, I use organic beeswax to thicken a liquid oil. Some seed oils like almond, avocado, or apricot seed oil are suitable for this. Avocado and apricot are thicker oils and should be diluted with something like sweet almond, coconut, or olive oil.

You could also replace some of the beeswax by cocoa butter or shea. You may have to reduce liquid oil slightly because shea butter has a softer consistency than beeswax.

    Aromatizing Your Herbal Lip Balm

If you want, you can add essential oils for a scent. Some good choices are frankincense or frankincense oil, as well as sweet orange and lavender. Or I’ll sometimes add some peppermint. You could make a version of chai using cardamom oil and a small amount of cinnamon bark (not leaf).

Avoid using essential oils with phototoxic properties, such as bergamot, lime and limonene.

    How to Infuse oil

There are several methods to infuse herbs into the liquid carrier. Infusing herbs with oil in a jar for 2 to 4 weeks is the longer method. You’ll want to shake the jar every so often. Double boilers are a faster alternative. The oil will turn a deep green after 1-3 hours of simmering.

Pour the herb mixture through a cheesecloth. Let the oil drip, then squeeze the herbs until all of the oil is gone. When you’re done, compost your herbs.

Your finished product can be stored in a tin. Or, you can use a lip-balm tube to make application easier.

    Yield

    Instructions

    • Add the herbs to the liquid oil. See above for more details.

    • Pour the lip balm into a small tin, jar, or tube and apply to chapped or dried lips.

    Notes

    • Apply with clean, dry hands. Store in a cool and dry place.
    • If stored correctly, this will last about six months (a bit longer if using vitamin E oil).
