Heidi Klein explains more about the label she founded, including her journey in the industry and her favorite piece for sunny climates.

How, when, why did you get into the industry?
I’ve always had a strong business mindset and knew that one day I’d start my own company. Penny Klein was my co-worker in 2002 and we bonded over a shared dream to start our own business. It wasn’t until I was heading off for winter sun and couldn’t find anyone selling bikinis that it became clear there was a gap in the market – just waiting for a touch of imagination.

We opened Heidi Klein Notting Hills a year later. We were both exhilarated, and we were also exhausted. But we soon realized that we’d created something that would appeal to Kate Moss and Elle MacPherson. It had also caught the attention of Vogue, and The Times. This catapulted Heidi Klein into the spotlight. In those early years we were able understand our clients and put them at the center of everything that we did. We launched the Chelsea Store, an online channel, a global wholesale business and international retail partners from this single store. It’s still very much an evolving and exciting journey as we strive towards our mission of creating beautiful beaches, travel, and resort wear for now and years to come.

How would you sum up the aesthetic of Heidi Klein?
Heidi Klein is effortlessly sophisticated. Our designs radiate elegance and focus on flawless fit, luxurious fabric, and styles which stand the test time. Our ready-to wear pieces are timeless and versatile, allowing them to seamlessly transition from daytime to evening. They embody a refined simplicity.
What do you consider a luxury?
Luxury is to me things that are timeless and well-crafted. They must also be of incredible quality. It’s about items that are beautifully made with meticulous attention to detail and bring endless joy.

Who is your client?
All the years we spent in the shop allowed us to truly get to understand our customers.
What are the cornerstones that you have built your business on?
Our business is built on:
- Our clients come in all shapes and sizes, so we make sure that each garment fits perfectly.
- Crafting pieces of furniture that will last for many years.
- Our supply chain is characterized by ethical and environmentally conscious sourcing practices.
- Our designs are timeless and will last for many years.
- We are committed to driving innovation throughout our entire business, including design and customer experience. This will allow us to stay ahead of trends.

What was the very first piece you ever designed?
We spent a great deal of time in the store when we first opened it in Notting Hill. This was to get to know our customers, their needs and wants. We saw a need for mix-and match swimwear sets. We saw a gap in the market for customizable sets that cater to individual body sizes and shapes, giving women confidence and comfort with their swimwear selections. Our key USP of ‘fit’ was born and has been central to the brand ever since.
What is on your current mood board?
Last summer, I spent some time in the South of France, where I became fascinated by the colors, smells, food and boutiques. It’s currently my inspiration for our next collection, I’m excited to launch it next year.
Currently, what is your favorite item?
I love our ‘Olive’ collection at the moment. It’s understated, yet sophisticated and captures the essence timeless elegance.
