I think my children are accustomed to me having strangely colored substances smeared all over my face. Face masks like this probiotic facial mask are great at hydrating and nurturing skin. Only downside is that you have to use it immediately. You can store this seaweed powder as a powder, and mix it as you need to to add to your skincare regimen.
It’s full of antioxidants and superfood ingredients that help draw impurities from the skin. Seaweed face masks also boost collagen and help to reduce fine lines. It doesn’t matter if it makes you look like The Hulk!
Seaweed Face Mask Ingredients
This mask contains spirulina and kelp seaweed powders. I’ve also added some French green clay (also known as sea clay) for its purifying benefits. The clay is also in keeping with the theme. You can add essential oils as well for additional benefits and scent improvement. Since it’s a seaweed mask it can smell a little fishy!
French Green Clay
French green clay is a natural product that was mined originally in France. It comes from ancient mud deposits under the sea. It is a great source of nutrients. It’s often used in face masks for its cleansing and exfoliating properties. If you have normal, combo, or an oilier skin type then it’s a great choice.
This clay gets its green color from kelp, algae, and iron oxides, depending on where it’s mined. It’s also full of minerals like calcium, potassium, and magnesium. French green clay purifies and is used to remove heavy and lead metals from wastewater. This clay also helps acne-prone skin due to its antibacterial and drawing properties.
If you have more sensitive skin or dry skin, then you’ll want to add some oil to your clay face mask. If you have drier, sensitive skin, you can use kaolin instead. You can also follow up your mask with homemade lotion to add extra moisture.
Spirulina Powder and Kelp Powder
They are the ingredients that make it a seaweed facial mask. Spirulina, one of the world’s most nutrient dense foods, is used by astronauts in space missions. It’s high in protein, iron, and inflammation-reducing antioxidants. While it’s not technically a plant (it was recently reclassified as a bacteria), spirulina comes from single-cell algae.
This mask also contains kelp powder, another superfood. It’s high in vitamins K, A, and B-12, plus calcium, iron, iodine, and magnesium. You’ll also find over 70 trace minerals in algae like kelp. Kelp contains antioxidants which can help to reduce skin redness and protect it from damage. Plus it’s a great skin moisturizer.
Customizing Your Face Mask
Seaweed is a great ingredient to use with oil or water-based products. However, as you probably learned in middle school science class, oil and water don’t mix. This isn’t a bad thing though as it gives us options.
You can use plain yogurt or a carrier oil if your skin is in need of a bit more moisture. You can use plain water, aloe gel, hydrosols and even aloe Vera gel. Add a small amount of glycerin into the liquid to benefit the skin. If you’re new to hydrosols, here are a few different options and what they do for the skin. Hydrosols are the liquid that’s leftover from distilling essential oils (and they make a great toner!).
- Rose hydrosol – Fights signs of aging and restores skin tone.
- Tea tree hydrosol – Soothes redness, irritation, and fights blemishes. Restores damaged skin.
- Helichrysum hydrosol – Purifies and balances the skin, and reduces swelling and inflammation. Promotes skin healing.
- Lavender hydrosol – Calming for both skin and mood. Helps with all types of skin irritations, including redness and itching to irritations and blemishes.
- Calendula hydrosol – Calendula hydrosol is a good overall option for any skin irritation or inflammation.
