The British Academy of Jewellery, in partnership with the engagement ring specialist Lewis Malka has launched the Lewis Malk Project.
Students from the HNC Art and Design (3D Design) (Jewellery Design and Manufacturing course) will be designing and manufacturing bespoke engagement ring inspired by culture and receiving feedback from Malka.
The project allows students to get hands-on experience with the jewellery industry, while also encouraging creativity and innovative thinking. With the support of Malka, renowned for his “exceptional” craftsmanship and contemporary designs, students will have the opportunity to “showcase their talents and push the boundaries of traditional jewellery design”.
Students are tasked with creating a “one-of-a-kind” engagement ring that celebrates a chosen culture.
Each engagement ring is designed with a faceted gem and presented on a display stand created by the students. This effectively communicates the cultural inspiration of their creations.
The project’s culmination will be an exhibition showcasing the students’ bespoke engagement rings, along with their accompanying display stands and information guides. Malka will pick two designs. These two students will each receive a free copy of The Engagement Ring, his book.
Eleni Zolia, course leader HNC Art and Design 3D (Jewellery) at BAJ, said: “We are delighted to partner with Lewis Malka for this exciting project. This collaboration not only provides our students with invaluable industry experience but also encourages them to explore the diverse cultural narratives surrounding engagement rings, paving the way for innovative and meaningful designs.”
Malka added: “This project offers a unique opportunity for students to immerse themselves in the world of jewellery design. I’m excited to work alongside these talented individuals and witness their creativity unfold as they explore the intersection of culture, history, and craftsmanship.”
