Hublot Big Bang Chronograph is Stronger Than Steel

Even though we are still firmly in the age of steel watches, we love to be pleasantly surprised by something as unique and special as the Hublot Big Bang Unico Full Magic Gold. It is housed in a proprietary material that bears the same name. Magic Gold, as mentioned in Summer Issue #69, is an incredible composite (for the record Hublot calls this an alloy), that is absolutely equivalent to 18k gold. There is nothing else like it in the watchmaking industry. We wish Hublot would make more watches in this toughest-of-all-golds (hardened steel has a Vickers hardness rating of 600; Magic Gold clocks in at 1,000 Vickers) but the scarcity adds to the appeal, no doubt. Hublot Big Bang Unico Full Magic Gold Limited Edition is only 200 pieces.

Here is what Hublot CEO Ricardo Guadalupe had to say about the new Full Magic Gold watch: “We first launched it in 2005, which means that this year, the Big Bang is turning eighteen! Hublot has achieved a major milestone, not only for itself but for the entire industry. It created its own style, spirit, universe and technical achievements as well as its own community of collectors and fans. It is still as youthful and carefree at 18 as it was the day it came out. The Big Bang is still a very interesting movie. The proof is in this “Full Magic Gold” version, which truly embodies the essence of our Manufacture.”

Hublot Big Bang is 18 years old. We know this makes some people feel nostalgic. Big Bang Unico is still a youthful watch. We think that Magic Gold’s innovation reminds industry of the brand’s commitment to traditional watchmaking. Magic Gold has a cool vibe, and even the most snarky of observers will admit it. It’s cool because Magic Gold takes a very mature approach to recognizing merit. Full Magic Gold is the first Big Bang watch to be available in this form. Hublot’s Big Bang has a complex three-part structure, which means it often uses a variety of materials. This Unico watch is pure luxury.

This class is marked by the relatively new Unico 2 chronograph calibre (Hub 1280). This movement has a column wheel that is visible on the dial, partly due to a horizontal clutch. Hublot is known to have favoured or even eliminated dials altogether. Perhaps this is a case of form following function. Hublot has a great opportunity to capitalize on this and it does so with great effect.

Always remember the size of any Big Bang model. This Full Magic Gold is 44mm in diameter, and 14.5mm in thickness. We don’t have the lug-to lug measurements but it is likely to be 54mm. This will make this watch difficult for smaller wrists. The watch is waterproof to 100m. Its calibre HUB1280 has an alleged power reserve 72 hours. The strap on this watch is structured rubber. However, the Hublot One Click system allows for a wide range of options.
