When you walk around town in sneakers or go for a run with your shoes, the feet sweat. A good pair of socks—ones that are breathable and moisture-wicking—can help alleviate some of the discomfort that comes from walking around with damp toes.
But it’s about more than just comfort: “Microorganisms such as odor-causing bacteria and fungal organisms that can result in athlete’s foot and fungal nails grow in moist environments,” Miguel Cunha, DPM, a sport podiatrist and founder of Gotham Footcare in New York City, tells SELF. “These microorganisms can lead to infections that change the appearance and smell of the foot.” In short: Having dry feet can be very important for your health, so we spoke with podiatrists to help you choose the best socks to mitigate sweat.
What kind of socks is best for sweaty foot?
In order for a sock to be breathable, it shouldn’t contain cotton, because cotton will absorb the moisture from your feet and leave you with a wet sock, Jay Spector, DPM, an Atlanta-based sport podiatrist and former president of the American Academy of Podiatric Sports Medicine, tells SELF. Look for socks made with merino, polyester, or nylon. These materials help to wick away moisture so that it can evaporate. This leaves your feet cooler and drier.
